alternative medicine

The number of alternative cancer therapies out there are too many to sift through, especially if you've recently been diagnosed.  How do you know what is backed up by research, or what is ineffective?  How do you know what options you have for your specific cancer, or the current state of your immune system?

If your insurance will cover it, or if you can afford it, a good place to start is to work together with a Naturopathic Doctor.  Most Naturopathic Doctors have a reasonable pay schedule, and are understanding of patients that are paying out-of-pocket.

According to naturopathic.org, "Naturopathic doctors are educated and trained in accredited naturopathic medical colleges. They diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness to restore and establish optimal health by supporting the person's inherent self-healing process. Rather than just suppressing symptoms, naturopathic doctors work to identify underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them."

Most Naturopathic Doctors have a specialty, so be sure to look for one that works with cancer patients.  Naturopathic Doctors will look at the 'whole' person, so they are not just looking to kill off cancer cells, but to look at areas of your immune system that might be weak, and find ways to strengthen that.  They'll look at other areas in your life that may impact your health.  The goal is to support your body as it heals itself fully beyond cancer.

A Naturopathic Doctor truly feels like a key member of your healing team, with their mission to complement your conventional treatment, to help you recover more quickly, and regain health and well-being.   If you want to learn more, naturopathic.org even has a useful 'Find an ND' feature, to help you locate NDs near you.
